As such, this book is not only a terrific work of sports history, but also a fabulous autobiography that yields compelling insights into Gretzky himself. Much like Gordie Howe's autobiography, Mr. Hockey, I was left with an overwhelming sense of just how down to earth some sports superstars can be. Rather than extolling their own virtues, these players constantly talk about Gratitude. It's all about how grateful they are to their parents, coaches, teammates and their fans. If you are sick and tired of the typical ego-maniacal professional athlete, read this book for a breath of fresh air.
• I'm a Sports Hypnotherapist who works with hockey players on the mental game of hockey. I bought this the day it came out because I'm writing a book on the mental game of hockey that I can give to my clients and thought this was great timing to read this hockey book. There are 95 hockey stories in this book. 90 of them are GREAT and so vivid that you can smell the ice. 2 of the stories are ok and 3 of them suck. But thats ok because when you do the math on the price per story its still a great deal. I love how Wayne tells about his passion of hockey, discusses Gordie Howe playing different teams and games and more.
  
  If you are looking for tips. This isnt really the book for that but he does discuss how it comes down to Aggressiveness, passion and hard work of course.

• I absolutely loved this book - it starts with some amazing stories from the old history of hockey, most very interesting and heartwarming - it appears to me that Wayne Gretzky found a way to mention every single great old star of the game along with many current stars too. The book later goes on Into some of the stories from Gretzky's career too. All told, an absolutely great book!
• Without doing proper reading about what the book was about before buying it I expected all of the stories to be about Gretzky's career. This book is about the history of hockey and all of its great players.
• The book chronicles the development of hockey in North America with many personal anecdotes of individual players. It provides a rough framework of the development of the NHL. That said, Wayne is a far better hockey player than he is a writer.
• I loved this book! We listen to it on CD in the car; so inspiring. We are new to hockey, but our family loves it! Gretzky is a class act. I make my son listen with me, and I'm so thankful for Gretzky's influence on him. We re-did his bedroom in a hockey theme with Greztky quotes I pulled from this book. Thank you #99👍
• I was surprised that this book ended up in many ways as a historical reference point for the sport of hockey. Pleasantly surprised. The book does cover the career of "99" but does not shy away from the long and deep history of the great sport which is hockey. Well worth your time.
• I don't know much about the game and have a hard time following when I watch, but this book is a page-turner. The stories are so entertaining and I appreciate learning a bit about the game's history in between the stories. The book reads so easily and makes Gretzky comes across as a nice, down-to-earth, sensible, and humble man.

• I don’t know if Thomas Keneally was indulging in magical realism before its time, but A Dutiful Daughter (1971) is one very weird book, and not just because most of it is related in the very unusual second person voice. As far as I can tell, it is about a brother and sister living in the backcountry of Australia who have a life changing experience when the sister has her first period at age 12 and, ignorant of such things, assumes she is either dying or has received some sort of mark of evil (the parents are very conservative Catholics).
  
  The parents find out and explain the situation but the whole experience leads to the sister becoming the head-of-household while the parents are, apparently, turned into a pair of bovines, or half-bovines (the mother has to be milked from this point on while the father, now a bull, occasionally wanders off to mount whatever cows he can find in the fields).
  
  The brother eventually goes off to college leaving the sister in charge of the farm and the parents. The main story takes place when he comes back on Christmas holiday, just as serious flooding is threatening the area, and just after he’s had a relationship with a fellow student that complicates his relationship with his sister.
  
  This is one of those books in which the interest lies not so much in the characters as in an incredibly bizarre situation, which the reader is challenged to makes head or tails of. The problem is that it’s tough to identify with characters stuck in such a surreal world. On the bright side, the book is fairly short.
• On Goodreads this reviewer 'The Super Moop' gave it 5 stars and wrote;
  
  "This little piece of madness set in a deserted corner of Australia is exactly the sort of book I love most. It's hardly a romp tho' being one of the bleakest things I've ever read. It's hopeless to begin with, set as it is in an infertile, dying patch of land at the end of the world and then Keneally chooses to kick things into a whole new level of brutality by deftly introducing just the right amount of magic into the mix.
  A Dutiful Daughter is a thought experiment into what might happen to the heads of those people who are abandoned on a corner of the earth with nobody but themselves for company, with no hope of escape and every minute bringing them lower, breaking their pride and their sense of compassion a little more. It is all about loneliness and sickness of the mind. It is as frightening as it is deeply sad, pathetic even, and while this is far from my idea of a good time, I'd still swear that it is a great, great book".

  I thoroughly agree. This is a great book. And I really enjoyed reading it (though "enjoyed", of course, is not the right word). It was eloquently written (as all of Thomas Keneally's works are) which made it easy to read, despite the depths of its' subject matter. I love books that venture into the workings of the dark and hidden recesses of the human mind to those places that are often carefully-composed and concealed behind a veneer of polite normality. And particularly being voyeur to the shame, bitterness and resentment usually found lurking amongst the other skeletons in the family closet can be a treat, a privilege or a curse, depending on whether the mind being explored is fictional, someone else's, or your own.
  This story was bizarre, it was very strange (as outlined by other reviews) but it was compelling in a dark and morose kind of way. One of those stories about out of the way places which appear utterly conventional to the casual observer, but turn out to hide the most unconventional characters and hideous secrets.
  I love Thomas Keneally's attention to the mundane; his vivid descriptions (of sounds, smells, rooms, clothing, weather) all create atmosphere, paint mental scenery and bring the whole thing to life. The details of everyday banality and minutiae seem starkly at odds with the mad and malevolent trip the plot later takes down the rabbit hole.
  At heart it's a story of one family's fracture and disintegration (of family dynamics, of relationships, of mind and of body) amidst their own unique challenges ("unique" barely begins to describe this family's challenges. To say any more would give too much away, tho' unfortunately some of the other reviews have already done that).
  Just while on the topic of other reviews, some are a little overblown (not being able to continue reading it because it was so disturbing, incest, bestiality, etc). This is dark satire, a work of fiction, an experiment of sorts. Yes it visits unpleasant territory, but that's the nature of human beings and what makes such studies fascinating. (And whether it's set in the 1970's or the 1770's is neither here nor there).
  This book was such an oddity (but immensely readable). It's a book that's stayed with me; and now some years after reading a borrowed copy, I've purchased a copy of my own. On receiving it, I gave it to my mother to read. She had it finished within two days, found it both strange and amusing in parts, but engrossing and interesting. She certainly wasn't traumatised by it.
  It was a great book, written while Thomas Keneally was still in the early years of his literary career, his creativity in full abundance ( in the days before editors and publishers turned everything to vanilla). Weird doesn't begin to describe it, but weird-in-the-best-way. Some people won't like it but I loved it, and I can see why the author calls this his favourite work. It's a book that would be even better the second time around.
• I'm a huge Tom Keneally fan, but this book was one I regret reading. Not at all sure what point TK was trying to make with this book, but all I took out of it was "that was bizarre" and disappointment at having invested precious time in reading it. Lacks the development of characters, time, place and historical relevance that I love in TK's work. A real miss for me. That said, I still love your work TK - just no more like this please.

• Let me start by saying most of the actual book has good information that is easy to follow so I'm really happy with that. However, the Pokedex in the back is pretty jacked up. I realize this isn't necessarily the writers issue -more like the editor or publisher but still causes me pause for reliability and accuracy. Pages 44 and 45 are exactly the same and after Rhydon appears in his proper place at the bottom of page 51 he continues to appear in the page bottom position on every page until page 63, regardless of the actual Pokemon listed.
• This is the first actual book I have found on how to play the game, and what all the items do that are included. An alphabetical list of the Pokémon could be used in addition to the awesome Pokedex that takes up 2/3rds of the book. Just makes me wonder where the 300+ Pokémon are that aren't listed in my phone, that are needed to fill the entire Pokedex.
  Do you have to fill all 378 slots before you can get more, or what? have to finish reading the book to find out. But overall an awesome guide.
• I chose this rating because I liked the book. It was well written with lots of details about the game. It explains everything that you need to know about how to play. It is organized and easy to understand. Anyone who loves this game would benefit from this book. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to succeed at playing this unique game.
• After reading a bunch of different guides, this one seems to be updated with the newer information that is available in the game updates. One useful tool that I haven't ever seen in a guide is the attack damage guide. It shows you what moves do what damage which is a huge addition to many of the other guides that I have reviewed.
• This book, also by Mark Nathan, is a further tutorial complete with in-depth instructions on how to play the Pokemon Go! Game. It has more of the required images to accompany the instructions, which is a plus. I liked the elaborate details, including different ways and places to catch Pokemon. The game is indeed addicting! Good job on this book, providing information to non-players!
• I never played the games growing up but I had some knowledge of it in general. When Pokemon Go came out, I again had a general idea of what it was but did not fully understand. This book gives a well thought out way of describing everything that happens in order to find gyms, Pokemon, battles, etc. It also goes over every type of attack and what you can expect to see while playing.
• I’ve bought and read too many Pokémon go books to count. They were all so basic I would be disappointed in the lack of revelation they provided. This book, however, gave me lots of valuable info. I highlighted the heck out of it.

• If you enjoy Elmore Leonard and Carl Hiaasen, you should read this Finnish take on some similar themes incompetent and possibly well-meaning criminals, dreamers, losers, everyone with an understandable but probably unattainable dream.
• Palm Beach Finland is an odd little book. If it was made into a film it would rival some of the strangest movies ever made. At times I wasn’t sure whether it was the way the author intended or the translation that made the plot so ‘out there’ – Think of it as a Tarantino-Esq book.
  
  The story begins with someone being killed in a house, accidentally and in a most bizarre way, but the person isn’t the owner and no-one knows who they were. We then move onto the owner of the property returning. Olivia Koshi has inherited the family home after the death of her father. The house is in need of a lot of repairs and Olivia is flat broke. The house is also on the edge of the new holiday resort, Palm Beach.
  
  Detective Jan Nyman is going undercover to find out who the killer or killers were. His cover is that he is a maths teacher on vacation. What Jan discovers is an exceptionally strange holiday resort – Palm Beach, run by Jorma Leivo. Jorma is a man who is determined to make the holiday resort a success and throws everything at making it that way – Legally or not.
  
  As you can tell from the small snippet I have given you, the book is completely and utterly different from anything I have ever read. I was unsure how I was going to fair with it at first and three chapters in I was thinking of giving up as I kept on having to re-read sections to fully understand them. However, I like wacky things, so why should this book be any different, so I continued.
  
  The book has an undertone of having a dark sense of humour, I was never quite sure whether I should be laughing or in shock at some of the scenes. The character development is superb and I especially loved Jan and his detective skills.
  
  After my initial concerns, I soon realised that I was whizzing through the pages and I was fully submerged in this outlandish book. Sometimes you need a break from the norm and this book will certainly give you that.

• Here’s why the story works Tuomainen has an autistic eye. His characters are two-dimensional cardboard cut-outs and this is why they are so hilariously funny. We do get their back story as the novel develops, and they begin to get rounded out. The author’s unique talent reminds me of Kurt Vonnegut Jnr. He, too, could see the absurdities and foibles of people, situations and life with clarity. Hence, his being the master of satire. Tuomainen similarly, trying his hand at scandi-noir sees only too clearly the absurdity of this genre. We see it, too, as Tuomainen elevates the humble Finnish bum to the glamorous heights of scandi-crime and murder. His methods of despatch are imaginative and extreme; the symbolism of destroying a Finnish sauna is not missed. The person/s who did it is showing this is personal and that nothing is sacred. Heh.
  
  Jan Nyman is an undercover policeman sent by Helsinki police to a seaside resort to investigate a murder. The resort is the brainchild of Jorma Leivo who copies the garish themes and designs of resorts in sunny regions such as Florida, the Mediterranean or the Pacific. Problem is, it is set in Finland. We meet Olivia Koski, in whose house the killing took place, Chico and Robin, who represent Tuomainen’s stock regular ‘Finnish Guy’ characters, complete with grey Led Zeppelin t-shirt and dreams of playing guitar like Bruce Springsteen. They are a duo clown act, like a Shakespearean Dogberry and Verges. There is Nea, the sex object, and a shady gangster character, Holma.
  
  Nyman and Holma are both on a mission to find the killers and arsonists, each for a different motive. Leivo is on a mission to expand his enterprise. Getting in his way is Olivia, whose house stands on a prime beauty spot by the shore which he wants as part of Palm Beach Finland. His aim is to persuade her to sell it to him or for Chico and Robin to harass her into leaving. Very soon, there is a comedy of errors as each character with their own ulterior motive seeks to deceive the other characters by promises of large sums of money and subterfuge.
  
  Compared to Tuomainen’s previous book, the Man Who Died, this is a much more polished scandi-noir pastische, albeit rather short. The Man Who Died, whilst good and well worth reading, was flawed in that the killings seemed senseless and random. Here, Tuomainen has mastered the crime noir to a T, keeping the reader hooked and turning the pages. It begins with the classic body, the detective, the suspects and then a love interest thrown in. The author constructs a well-honed series of events each adding to the knots that need to be untied to solve the crime
  
  It is these sharp social observations which make the author a great stand-up comedian. Oh all right, a sit-down writer of black crime-noir Finnish-style, then.
• I was really looking forward to reading this one and I have to say that it certainly did not disappoint!
  
  I thought that the plot was great and it was definitely a page turner and a tad quirky at times which makes it stand out from other books in this genre. The characters were well developed and I enjoyed their interaction. This is the first book I have read by this author and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
  
  Four stars from me for this one, I really enjoyed it, well written and a great, gripping story! Highly recommended!!
